Dynamics 365 Finance Now Reconciles the Books With an Agent. The Month-End Close Is Becoming Continuous.
TL;DR

Microsoft's Account Reconciliation Agent, in production-ready preview for Dynamics 365 Finance, replaces the reactive, report-driven reconciliation with a workspace that raises exceptions and an agent that evaluates them and recommends actions. It is a concrete step toward a continuous close, and a clean example of automate versus optimize.

Microsoft's Account Reconciliation Agent for Dynamics 365 Finance, in production-ready preview, replaces reactive report-driven reconciliation with a workspace that raises exceptions and an agent that evaluates and recommends actions, moving toward a continuous close. It manages the transaction faster; optimising the decisions on the resulting books is a separate companion layer.

Microsoft's Account Reconciliation Agent, now in production-ready preview for Dynamics 365 Finance, changes how the books get squared. Instead of the reactive routine of running SSRS reports and hunting for mismatches, a proactive Account reconciliation workspace raises exceptions on its own, and an intelligent agent evaluates each one and recommends an action. The 2026 release wave adds Model Context Protocol support, better reporting, and new modules such as Inventory, while the broader finance assistant expands into variance analysis, data preparation in Excel, and customer communications in Outlook.

What a continuous close actually means

Traditionally the close is a monthly crunch: at period end, finance matches subledgers to the general ledger, chases the exceptions, and produces the reports, all at once, under time pressure. An agent that continuously matches transactions and surfaces only the exceptions turns that event into a background process that runs all month. The books trend toward always-current instead of monthly-correct, and a great deal of end-of-month stress and overtime simply evaporates.

The human stays on the exceptions

The agent does not replace the accountant; it does the high-volume matching and hands up the exceptions with recommended actions for a person to approve. That is the same governed pattern across Dynamics agents, human in the loop, least-privilege access, a full audit trail. The effect on the job is a promotion of sorts: the clerk spends less time keying and matching the routine and more time exercising judgment on the genuinely hard cases, which is where a person actually adds value.

Read the verb, again

It is worth being precise about what this is. The agent makes the ERP better at managing the transaction, reconciling faster, with fewer hands, more often. That is real value, and it is not the same as optimising a decision. Reconciliation is a truth-finding task, does this match that, rather than an optimisation, what is the best move. Both matter, and they are different kinds of work. This agent is very good at the first kind.

Where the decision layer sits, for Dynamics teams

Here is the useful connection. A continuous close gives you a cleaner, faster, always-current picture of the books, and that accurate picture is exactly the input a decision layer needs. The better and more current your reconciliation, the better the decisions you can compute on top of it, the margin-optimal price, the safety stock that frees cash, the shortest pick path. The agent keeps the books true; the system of intelligence decides what to do about them. On Dynamics that decision layer runs as a companion app on Dataverse and Power Platform, shipped through AppSource, alongside agents like Business Central's Payables Agent and under the same Immersive Home cockpit, and it is where Cognilium works. Making the books current is a genuine step. Making the business more profitable is the layer above it.
