Business Central Now Ships With Agents That Do the Books. Note the Verb: They Automate. They Don't Optimize.
TL;DR

Dynamics 365 Business Central's 2026 wave 1 puts autonomous agents in the box, a Payables Agent that clears invoices end to end, a Sales Order Agent that keys orders, an Expense Agent, all on the built-in Copilot and MCP. It is a real leap in what the ERP does for you. It also draws the cleanest line yet between managing the transaction and making the optimal call.

Dynamics 365 Business Central 2026 wave 1 ships built-in autonomous agents, a Payables Agent, Sales Order Agent and Expense Agent, on the included Copilot and MCP, with a human kept in the loop. They automate the transaction; the optimal decision underneath, the last mile, remains a companion-app layer on the same governed stack.

With its 2026 release wave 1, Microsoft is shipping something notable inside Dynamics 365 Business Central: not just a chat assistant, but built-in autonomous agents that carry out real back-office work. Per Microsoft's own release plan, the Payables Agent handles accounts payable end to end, reading invoices, matching vendors and accounts, and preparing them for approval with human oversight, while a Sales Order Agent keys sales orders with smarter item matching, and an Expense Agent captures expenses from a phone. Copilot comes with the licence, and the agents reach data through a built-in MCP server.

What is in the box

This is a genuine step. A small business on Business Central now gets, at no extra cost, a copilot and a set of agents that take tedious, high-volume tasks off people's desks: the Payables Agent can even run without email setup for a first try, several Sales Order Agents can run at once per company, and every agent's work lands in a shared task pane where a person reviews it. Microsoft has kept a human firmly in the loop, agents prepare and propose, people approve. For the mid-market, this is the most tangible agentic ERP has felt, the same direction as Copilot reaching into Finance and Operations, now standard in the small-business suite.

Read the verb

Now look closely at what these agents actually do. They automate. The Payables Agent automates the keystrokes of paying an invoice. The Sales Order Agent automates the typing of an order. That is the ERP getting better at the thing an ERP has always done, managing the transaction, faster and with fewer hands. It is real value, and it is not the same thing as optimising the decision underneath. Nothing here decides the margin-optimal price to quote on that order, the safety stock that keeps cash free, or the shortest way to pick it. Those are not keystrokes to automate. They are calls to optimise.

Manage versus optimize, on the same stack

This is the line worth keeping straight, because Microsoft has just drawn it for you. Business Central is your system of record, and it now automates more of what it records. The system of intelligence, the layer that makes the optimal call rather than the recorded one, sits on top: a companion app running in tandem on the same Dataverse and Power Platform, shipped through AppSource, governed and low-risk. When your ERP already reads the invoice and keys the order, the remaining edge is not doing those faster. It is optimising the decisions it only manages, the last mile where the margin actually lives.

Where this leaves the mid-market

The takeaway for a team live on Business Central is not to wait for Microsoft to add the rest. Automation of the transaction is arriving in the box, and that is good. But the optimal price, the optimal stock, and the optimal pick, the decisions worth real money, are not on anyone's roadmap as one-size features, because they depend on your data and your margins. They are the last mile of your ERP, and they are a companion you add, not a checkbox you wait for.
