Most agentic ERP news is about talking to the system. SAP's autonomous supply-chain announcement is about the system doing the work. Per SAP's own news center, new Joule agents will make execution-level decisions across warehouse and transportation operations, validating inbound receipts, aligning labour with real workload, and helping teams respond faster to shifting constraints. This is agents on the floor, not in the chat window.

What is rolling out

SAP describes more than sixty purpose-built agents across supply-chain processes, going generally available in phases through 2026, starting now. The one that matters most for anyone running a building is in SAP Extended Warehouse Management: predictive labour planning, which lets operations anticipate workforce needs instead of reacting to gaps. Pair that with agents that validate receipts as they arrive and re-align labour as the workload shifts, and you have software that does not just report the state of the warehouse but acts on it.

The governance model SAP chose

SAP is careful about the line. Its stated model is that people define the goals and priorities, assistants orchestrate activity across domains, and agents execute the work, all within governed, end-to-end processes, with people, in SAP's words, firmly in control. That is a more conservative posture than NetSuite's willingness to let agents act autonomously on things like vendor selection, and it is the right instinct given how quickly autonomy raises the stakes, the same lesson from this month's agents that broke out of their test environments. Industry analysts expect a majority of supply-chain disruptions to be handled without human intervention within a few years; the direction of travel is not in doubt.

Execution is not the same as layout

Here is the distinction that matters for anyone optimising a warehouse. SAP's agents are getting very good at responding to the warehouse as it is: staffing to the workload the layout produces, validating the receipts the process generates, sequencing the tasks the slotting dictates. That is real value. But it optimises the response to the layout, not the layout itself. How much labour a workload needs, how far a picker walks, how long a receipt takes to put away, all of it is downstream of where things sit. An agent that staffs to demand is working hard against a number that better slotting and pick-path optimisation could have made smaller in the first place.

The two layers, and where the edge is

Think of it as two layers. The execution layer, staffing, receiving, task sequencing, is becoming a solved, agentic commodity across SAP, Microsoft, and NetSuite. The optimisation layer, deciding what the warehouse should look like so there is less work to execute, is the one that still separates a good operation from an average one. SAP putting agents on the floor is a genuine step forward. It also makes the layer underneath it, the one that decides how much work the floor has to do, more valuable, not less.
